Remembering the Legacy of Sokcho’s Veteran Talent, Kyu-chae Park

Kyu-chae Talent Park, a well-known actor from Sokcho known for his roles in ‘The First Republic’ and ‘The Country Diary’, passed away on the 1st at the age of 85. He had been undergoing treatment for pneumonia until recently.

Early Life and Career

Park Gyu-chae, born in Sokcho in 1938, began his acting career in 1957 at the National Theater Company. Prior to that, he attended Sokcho Middle School, Yangjeong High School, and studied Agriculture at Korea University. It is said that he found his passion for acting after performing in a play for local farmers, bringing light to the countryside.

After working as a voice actor at MBC, Park made his broadcast debut as a public talent at Seoul Central Broadcasting Station in 1962. He went on to appear in notable dramas such as ’25 Hours of Ambition’, ‘The First Republic’, ‘Silver Grass’, ‘500 Years of the Joseon Dynasty Series’, ‘Chief Investigator’, ‘Love and Ambition’, ‘Kim’s 3rd Period’, and ‘The 5th Republic’. One of his most memorable roles was in the political drama ‘The 1st Republic’ in the 1980s, where he portrayed Lee Ki-bung, the second-in-command of Syngman Rhee’s regime. He also gained popularity for his performances in ‘Annals of Rejection’ and ‘Princess Wealthier Kim Gap-soon’ during the same era. Additionally, his involvement in ‘Silver Grass’ coined the catchphrase ‘onal-Day’. In the long-running drama ‘Diary of the Country’, he played a significant role as a close friend of Chairman Kim (Bul-am Choi).

Political Involvement and Honors

During the 13th presidential election in 1987, Park delivered a supportive speech for Kim Young-sam, who was then the opposition candidate and later became the president.

In 1996, he was awarded the National Medal of the Republic of Korea. The following year, towards the end of the Kim Young-sam administration, Park was appointed as the president of the Korea Film Promotion Corporation, where he served for approximately one year.

In 1999, he served as a public relations member of the Organizing Committee for the Sokcho International Tourism Expo held in his hometown.

The grieving family fondly remembers Park, stating, “He was a dedicated individual who always took his craft seriously throughout his life.”

Funeral Arrangements

The funeral will take place at Vinso Funeral Cultural Center in Danwon Hospital, Ansan, Gyeonggi-do, on the morning of the 3rd.
