Professor CR Omanakuttan, a Renowned Writer and Teacher, Passes Away

Renowned Malayalam professor, writer, and speaker, Professor CR Omanakuttan (80), breathed his last yesterday at 2.50 pm in a private hospital in Kochi. He leaves behind a rich legacy as a dedicated educator and prolific author.

The mortal remains of Professor Omanakuttan will be taken from his residence, located near Kochi Lisi Hospital, to the Kadavantra Indoor Stadium at 9.30 am today. A public viewing of the body will be held there until 2 pm, after which the funeral procession will proceed to the Ravipuram crematorium for his cremation, scheduled at 2.30 pm with official honors.

Family and Accomplishments

Professor Omanakuttan, married to Hemalatha, a retired High Court Clerk, is survived by his children – Director Amal Neerad and Professor CR Anupa of Maharaja’s College. Additionally, he has two nephews – Actress Jyotirmayi and screenwriter Gopan Chidambaram, associated with the Kaladi Sanskrit University.

Born on February 13, 1943, in Kottayam Tirunakkara, Professor Omanakuttan taught Malayalam at Maharaja’s College for 23 years before retiring in 1998. He hailed from a prominent literary background, which further fueled his passion for writing.

Acknowledged for his exceptional literary contributions, Professor Omanakuttan received the prestigious Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 2010 for his acclaimed work, ‘Sribhuthanatha Vilasam Nair Hotel.’ With more than twenty-five books to his credit, some of his major works include ‘Nee Satyam Jnanam Anandam,’ ‘Kalpad,’ ‘Omanakatha,’ ‘Pakarnattam,’ ‘Ezhashivan and Varikunta,’ ‘Abhinava Shakunthalam,’ ‘Thanneer Thanneer,’ and ‘Devdas’ among others.

A Lasting Legacy

Two weeks before his demise, Professor Omanakuttan’s latest books ‘Shavamtheinikal’ and ‘Chosen Stories’ were unveiled in a grand ceremony held in Kochi. This event marked his final public appearance, leaving behind a lasting impression on his admirers and fellow literary enthusiasts.

Prof. Omanakuttan’s books ‘Shavamtheinikal’ and ‘Chosen Stories’ were released in Kochi two weeks ago. This was his last public event.
