Research results have shown that using alternative salt can significantly reduce the risk of high blood pressure to the level of pharmaceutical drugs. Salt substitute refers to a salt substitute containing approximately 25% potassium chloride salt to reduce sodium chloride intake.

Researchers from the Clinical Research Institute of Peking University First Hospital in China published the results of a study on changes in the number of cases of hypertension according to the use of alternative salt in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC) on the 12th (local time). In a two-year trial conducted in 48 aged care facilities, the alternative salt intake group showed 40% fewer cases of high blood pressure compared to the regular salt intake group. Since excessive salt intake and insufficient potassium intake are risk factors for high blood pressure, an alternative salt intake that reduces sodium intake and increases potassium intake has the effect of preventing high blood pressure. The researchers explained, “For elderly people with normal blood pressure, the incidence of high blood pressure can be reduced by regular use of salt substitutes.”

Recently, the American Heart Association (AHA) began preparing recommendations for the use of alternative salt for patients with high blood pressure. Since accumulated studies have shown that alternative salt lowers blood pressure, the society believes that patients with high blood pressure need to use it actively. “The most recent systematic review and analysis of 31,949 participants in 21 clinical trials confirmed the beneficial effects of potassium-rich salt on clinical outcomes,” the AHA said.
