The 1999 Columbine High School Massacre
The Events of April 20, 1999
On April 20, 1999, Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, became the site of one of the deadliest school shootings in United States history. Seniors Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold murdered twelve students and one teacher, and injured twenty-four others, before taking their own lives within the school.

The attack began at 11:19 a.m. wiht the detonation of two propane bombs in a parking lot, intended to draw students and staff outside. These bombs partially failed, causing minimal damage and few injuries. Harris and Klebold then moved to the school’s entrance and began shooting students outside. They then entered the school, moving to the library, where they committed the majority of the murders. The shooting lasted approximately 17 minutes before Harris and Klebold committed suicide in the library.
The Perpetrators: Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold
Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were both seniors at Columbine High School. They had a history of social isolation, anger, and fascination with violence, documented in journals, writings, and online postings. According to the FBI’s report on the Columbine High School shooting, both perpetrators had expressed violent ideations and planned the attack for over a year.
Harris, described as bright but volatile, maintained a website detailing his anger and plans. Klebold, while appearing more reserved, shared Harris’s resentment and participated in the planning and execution of the attack. Their motives were complex, stemming from feelings of alienation, rejection, and a desire for notoriety. They specifically targeted students they perceived as popular or athletic, as evidenced by their “hit list” found after the massacre.
