contested Control of Pokrovsk and Kupiansk
Reports from the front lines in eastern Ukraine indicate intensified fighting, with Russia claiming significant gains in the cities of Pokrovsk and Kupiansk. While both Moscow and Kyiv offer differing accounts of the situation, evidence suggests a challenging scenario for Ukrainian forces.
The Kremlin’s Defense Ministry stated on November 11, 2024, that its forces have fully taken control of the eastern part of Kupiansk. Regarding Pokrovsk, considered a strategically important “gateway” to the Donetsk region, Russia asserts full encirclement of the city. Ukraine acknowledges the entry of approximately 300 Russian soldiers into the city’s perimeter but disputes the claim of being fully surrounded.
Visual evidence, including videos shared by Russian military bloggers, depicts dozens of Russian soldiers and armored vehicles entering Pokrovsk along heavily damaged roads. Some vehicles appear heavily modified, prompting comparisons to post-apocalyptic imagery.
Scale of Russian Offensive
According to Oleksandr Syrskyi, chief of the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed forces, Russia has committed a substantial force to the offensive on Pokrovsk, deploying an estimated 150,000 troops, including mechanized brigades and riflemen, as of November 11, 2024. This represents a significant escalation in the intensity of fighting in the region.
Territorial control
As of November 11, 2024, Russia maintains control over approximately 19% of Ukrainian territory, encompassing an area of 116,000 square kilometers. This figure highlights the extent of Russian occupation as the start of the conflict. The ongoing offensives around Pokrovsk and Kupiansk aim to further expand this control.
