Russia Announces Recapture of Villages in Kursk Oblast Amid Counterattack
The Russian Ministry of Defense announced on the 16th that it had recaptured two villages in the western region of Kursk from Ukrainian forces. The country continues to fight back against cross-border attacks by Ukraine.
Russia announced that two villages will be recaptured near the border with Sumy Oblast in northeastern Ukraine. Reuters has not been able to independently confirm this.
Russian military commanders and pro-Russian military bloggers said last week that Russia had recaptured about 10 villages in the Kursk region.
Ukraine says it has taken control of about 100 settlements in the region, covering an area of more than 1,300 square kilometers.
On the 16th, the governor of the Kursk region ordered the evacuation of two villages located within 15 kilometers of the Ukrainian border.
In his speech on the same day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said that he had consulted with Army Commander-in-Chief Sirsky regarding the situation in Kursk Oblast, and that he was “acting every day according to the plan.”
Shirsky also provided details of the slow advance of Russian forces in eastern Ukraine, including the railway and logistics hub of Pokrovsk.
