Ukraine “needs long-range weapons”… Russia claims the occupation of Lehman
(TEHRAN = Yonhap News) Correspondent Lee Seung-min = Russian troops are intensifying their offensive to occupy the Donbas (region encompassing Donetsk and Luhansk provinces) in eastern Ukraine.
According to Reuters and TASS news agency on the 29th (local time), the Russian army intensively bombarded Severodonetsk, a key strategic point in the Donbas region, on the same day.
“The situation in Severodonetsk has worsened extremely,” Luhansk Governor Serhi Haidai said.
He also feared that an immediate retreat should be considered in order not to become a prisoner of the Russian army.
Severodonetsk city officials said that water, electricity and communications were cut off in the recent fierce battle, and civilians who could not evacuate were terrified. Some residents were forced to get drinking water from wells as shells fell, authorities added.
Severodonetsk, with a population of about 100,000, has recently been under intensive attack, with three sides surrounded by Russian forces. Authorities estimate that 1,500 civilians were killed in the recent attack.
“The situation on the eastern front is very complex and difficult,” Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a video address the day before.
Russia’s defense ministry said in a statement today that it had completely occupied Lehman, a railway strategic point in the Donbas region.
However, the Ukrainian military authorities refuted that the battle in Lehman was not over.
Mikhail Podolyak, aide to the office of the President of Ukraine, called for long-range weapons support to counter Russian shelling.
“If the Russian army attacks from a distance greater than 70 km, we have no way to counter it,” Podolyak said on Twitter, requesting the international community’s support for long-range weapons.
Multiple U.S. officials told Reuters they were considering providing long-range, multiple rocket launchers to Ukraine.
