Salt Lake City’s Iconic Whale Sculpture Finds Home in Japan
Salt Lake’s Whale Sculpture Travels to Japan
Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall recently sent a replica of the “Out of the Blue” whale sculpture to Matsumoto, Japan. This gift celebrates 65 years of friendship between the two cities as sister cities.
The exchange happened in early October. A video from the Salt Lake City Department of Economic Development shared the whale’s journey of 5,500 miles.
A Lasting Partnership
Salt Lake City and Matsumoto have shared ties since 1958. During a July 2023 visit to Salt Lake City, Matsumoto officials toured local attractions, including the Pioneer Day parade. In return, Matsumoto’s Mayor Yoshinao Gaun invited Mendenhall and a team to Japan for a visit.
Gift exchanges are a tradition on these trips. Salt Lake City wanted to represent its spirit with something memorable. The whale sculpture, installed in 2022, symbolizes the city. Its recognition had inspired various merchandise.
Creating the Replica
Artists Stephen Kesler and Mike Murdock recreated the whale in a smaller size for the trip. The final sculpture was ready before the delegation left for Japan.
During the ceremony at the historic Matsumoto Castle, Mendenhall explained the whale’s significance. She noted that it was a beloved symbol for Salt Lake City, while Gaun showed his appreciation with a smile.
Mendenhall added that the trip strengthened ties between the two cities. The whale now serves as a unique connection, representing Salt Lake City in Matsumoto. “A little piece of Salt Lake City now lives in Matsumoto,” said Lindsey Nikola from the Mayor’s Office.
