According to Al Jazeera, Yemen’s Houthi movement accused Saudi Arabia of launching 26 military strikes against areas under Houthi control over a 24-hour period. The cross-border escalations coincide with intensifying maritime disruptions in the Red Sea as regional conflict spreads.

Houthi Accusations of Saudi Strikes in Yemen

Yemen’s Houthi group stated on Friday that Saudi Arabia targeted areas under insurgent control with 26 separate strikes in a single day, according to reporting cited by Al Jazeera. The group asserted that the total number of Saudi air operations against their positions reached 300 over the preceding week. The conflict stems back to 2014 when the Houthis captured the Yemeni capital of Sanaa, plunging the country into civil war. While fighting had remained largely frozen since 2022, hostilities erupted again in July. Saudi Arabia has led a military coalition backing Yemen’s internationally recognized government since 2015, an intervention that helped trigger a severe humanitarian crisis.

Maritime Blockade and Red Sea Disruption

Earlier this month, the Houthis launched an offensive to seize Yemen’s entire Red Sea coast, establishing control over the vital Bab al-Mandab strait. The group declared a maritime blockade targeting Saudi shipping vessels. According to maritime tracking firm Kpler, Saudi oil exports passing through the strait have dropped since July, even though five loaded cargo ships managed to transit the corridor over the past week. The Houthis maintain that commercial navigation through the Bab al-Mandab strait remains free and open for all international vessels except those flagged or operated by Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, regional actors and international allies have reacted to the escalating maritime security threats. The BBC reported that Saudi air defenses intercepted and shot down a Houthi drone south of Mecca. In response to the intensifying attacks, Arab states and the European Union issued expressions of solidarity with Saudi Arabia, according to Arab News.

Humanitarian Impact of Renewed Conflict

The United Nations reported on Friday that the renewed military campaigns have displaced more than 112,000 civilians inside Yemen. Nearly 3,000 additional residents fled across the sea to Djibouti to escape the violence, compounding existing vulnerabilities across the impoverished nation. Data from the United Nations indicates that 17 million people in Yemen struggle to secure daily meals, with an additional one million individuals facing extreme hunger conditions. The combination of revived civil conflict, airstrikes, and maritime blockades continues to deepen the humanitarian emergency across the region.
