While the West has recently pledged support for main battle tanks to Ukraine, which is at war with Russia, French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that he may consider supporting fighter jets if conditions are met, the they are expected to affect neighboring countries.

In a joint press conference held on the 30th (local time) after a summit meeting with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte at the Binnenhof Parliament House in The Hague, Netherlands, President Macron responded to a reporter’s question, ” Is there a possibility that France? is sending fighter jets to Ukraine?” “Nothing,” AFP reported.

Macron said there are conditions where Ukraine must first ask, never escalate tensions and not attack the Russian mainland.

He said this also included the condition that it should not weaken the capabilities of the French army.

“Ukraine is not currently requesting fighter jets from France,” he said.

Ukraine is requesting fighter jets and long-range missile support just days after it agreed to receive main battle tanks from European countries such as the United States, Britain and Germany.

The Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Rutte, said, “There is no taboo, but it will be a big step forward if the support of fighters is decided.” Recently, among Dutch politicians, there was a proposal to send F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine.

Regarding this, Prime Minister Rutte said, “So far, Ukraine has not made any demands.” This is interpreted to mean that Ukraine can review it positively if requested.

Germany, which recently decided to support the Leopard 2 main battle tank, is negative about providing fighter jets.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in an interview with Germany’s Tagesspiegel on the 29th, “If the heavy weapons debate flares up again after supporting the main battle tank, the people’s trust in the country will be shaken.”

President Joe Biden is also in the same position as Germany regarding the provision of the F-16.

On his way back to the White House after an outside event, President Biden answered “no” to a reporter asking, “Do you agree with the United States sending F-16s to Ukraine?”
