Shake Off the Hangover Blues: The Surprising Exercise Routine to Revive Your Body After a Night Out
Regular, High-Intensity Exercise Relieves Hangover Symptoms
Drinking large quantities of alcohol quickly can lead to hangovers, accompanied by symptoms such as headache, tiredness, vomiting, and muscle pain. While drinking plenty of water or resting can help alleviate hangovers, recent research suggests that regular exercise, especially vigorous exercise, can be effective in relieving hangover symptoms.
A research team at the University of Houston analyzed data from 1,676 college students to investigate the correlation between hangovers after drinking and exercise. The study found that people who engage in vigorous exercise, such as running, experience less severe hangovers than those who don’t.
The researchers explained that high-intensity exercise can relieve hangover symptoms by reducing inflammation in the body and improving metabolism. Exercise can also act as a mechanism to reduce physical discomfort caused by hangovers, relieving pain by secreting endorphins and promoting metabolism, which contributes to more effective elimination of alcohol and its byproducts.
Professor Clayton Neighbours, lead author of the study, said: “This study may suggest regular, vigorous exercise as a new way to deal with hangovers after drinking.” However, he emphasized that excessive drinking is not recommended to relieve a hangover and drinking in moderation is the best prevention method.
The study’s findings were published in “Addictive Behaviors”, a renowned international academic journal in the field of addiction and an SSCI registered journal. While the study was aimed at college students, future research needs to be conducted in various age groups to further investigate the effects of hangovers based on age and intensity of exercise.
