Shein Global Holdings shares fell as much as 28% in the grey market on September 1, 2026, ahead of the company’s scheduled Tuesday debut on the Hong Kong stock exchange. According to Futu Holdings data, shares closed Monday evening at HK$42.2, a 13.1% decline that resulted in a loss of HK$636 per 100-share board lot, excluding transaction fees.

The price drop follows the company’s decision to price its shares below the top end of its marketed range. Shein raised HK$13.6 billion ($1.7 billion) from the listing, which established a stock market valuation of $26.3bn, according to the BBC.

This current valuation represents a significant decrease from previous estimates. The BBC reports that Shein was once valued at nearly $100bn, meaning the current market valuation is approximately a quarter of that former figure.

Factors Impacting Shein’s Market Valuation

The company’s path to a public listing has faced several setbacks. The BBC reports that Shein previously made failed attempts to list in the United Kingdom and the United States. These efforts were hampered by concerns regarding the company’s environmental impact and labor practices.

Beyond regulatory and ethical scrutiny, the company faces shifting market dynamics. The BBC notes that global trade tensions and increased competition have contributed to the decline in the company’s estimated value.

Additionally, the BBC reports that crackdowns on cheap imports by the European Union and the United States are currently squeezing the company’s finances.

Louise Deglise-Favre of research firm GlobalData told the BBC that the debut occurs at a complex moment because investors are becoming skeptical about the overall performance of fast-fashion companies.

Company Scale and Operations

Founded in China and currently headquartered in Singapore, Shein manages an e-commerce network with operations in more than 150 countries, according to the BBC.

The company utilizes a vast network of factories in China to source current fashions at low prices, a model that has driven popularity among younger consumers. In a filing ahead of the listing, Shein stated it had 281 million active customers who placed more than one billion orders in the year ending March 2026, according to the BBC.
