[Reporter Ling Meixue/Taipei Report]Ink painter Chen Yongmo’s creative career combines inheritance and innovation, and at the same time pays attention to the “contemporary” issue of ink and wash. Chen Yongmo mentioned in his preface: “I have tried painting the human body, so to speak, since 1990. By chance, I participated in a human body sketching session convened by the painter Ms. Wang Chunxiang. Once a week, three or five painters hired models together to sketch together and observe each other. I used to Drawing on nude women with brushes and rice paper. The body proportions and appearance of the models at that time were above average. I couldn’t help but admire God for creating human beings so perfectly. I praised God and also praised the beauty of the human body. It is not easy to take both pen and ink into consideration when sketching from life. It also gives me a chance to hone myself. .”

Chen Yongmo believes that in beauty paintings, young people are youthful and beautiful, while older people are wise and charming. “Tang Bohu, Chen Hongshou, Ren Bonian, Zhang Daqian and even Yang Shanshen each expressed the beauty of women in different eras. Our era has entered the era of equal rights between men and women, women are no longer objectified, and painters can express nude women calmly and without any worries. Among them, elegance and vulgarity are all that remain. It’s as if the painter is single-minded…”

Chen Yongmo thinks that his early paintings of beauties were mostly neat and rigorous, with naked women mostly uncovered. However, in the past ten years, he does not like to be completely naked, and hopes that viewers will see more ethereal and charming paintings. So he painted on the nude body, added flowers, or used hot springs to cover the body to make it vague. “The painter’s emotions and desires are hidden through female themes. These works have been kept in painting boxes for a long time, and they are occasionally used for self-entertainment. As the epidemic was lifted, the lockdown was also lifted.”
