Nafissatou Cissé is a young Burkinabè actress and comedian. She perfectly embodies one of the main roles in the film SIRA by director Apolline Traoré. But a role will change a life. One role changed Nafissatou forever. Portrait!

The rest after this ad

Nafissatou Cissé is the perfect Sahelian. Coming from a large family, she lets the joy of living and the conviviality emanating from the large African family transcend. Slender, magnificent ebony complexion… Her smile never leaves her. In the prime of adulthood, she is also a shapely head. A student in marketing and business management at Aube Nouvelle University, she was also a hostess.

Today, we can say without hesitation that she is a young Burkinabè actress of international renown. To think that it only took one role for him to enter the big leagues! The famous Burkinabè actor Lazare Minoungou will tell us that she “is young first”. That is to say, for a try at role-playing, it was a masterstroke, a success for the neophyte of acting.

“I will already say that she had an incredible opportunity to enter the world of auteur cinema with a bang in a role of choice with a professional and passionate director (Apolline Traoré, Editor’s note)”, Lazare Minoungou whispers to us. He is of course talking about the role that Nafissatou Cissé embodies in SIRA by director Apolline Traoré.

The first of her career that she plays with perfection. Currently, it no longer counts the distinctions received through this role. She won the Galion d’Or Prize for Best Actress at the 2nd edition of the Master International Film Festival (MIFF 2023, Yasmine Hammamet, Tunisia).

She is also nominated for the AMAA (African Mouvies Academy Awards) in Nigeria, and also holds the prize for youngest African actor at the Sotigui Awards. So many trophies won by this young Burkinabè actress who is now passionate about cinema. A baby born with teeth, in a Burkina full of movie-making dinosaurs. It’s a revelation, it’s the future. However, nothing predestined her to the cinema.

How did Nafissatou Cissé get into cinema?

For the record, cinema was not part of a program or a life plan drawn up by Nafissatou. Basically, Nafissatou’s life plan was well mapped out and believe it, cinema was not part of it. However, those around her saw her as a ready-made actress. But in his head, they are “ marketing studies, it’s just the studies and the passion, it was more dance than cinema“, she admits. “ But the cinema came by chance, also by a little inch.

An uncle was browsing social networks and told me that there is a poster circulating and the profile we are looking for matches me, why not give it a try? You already manage to make us laugh“, reveals Nafissatou who until then was still not interested, because, she said, cinema did not fit with her vision of the future, but the uncle will insist.

The rest, you know it. A SIRA was born to us thanks to the director Apolline Traoré, who made him play this role in the dramatic film SIRA. A role that will earn him the nickname SIRA and an entry ticket into the history of the seventh art in Burkina Faso and beyond.

As a reminder, Sira is a dramatic film, written and directed by Apolline Traoré whose main actors are, among others, Nafissatou Cissé, Mike Danon, Lazare Minoungou, Nathalie Vairac, etc. According to the synopsis of the film, “Sira, a young Fulani girl, and her tribe cross the desert to go to a village where her fiancé Jean-Sidi is waiting to marry her. Suddenly, all the men are violently massacred by a gang that appears out of nowhere.

The leader of the attackers, Yéré takes Sira away for having been humiliated by her. Raped and left for dead in the desert, Sira finds herself alone facing her instinct for survival. She finds refuge in a cave. She discovers in this desert that the terrorist camp is led by Moustapha, her father’s best friend and Yéré her rapist.

Between bitterness, desolation and desire for revenge, Sira, who will have to accept that she is pregnant by her attacker, decides to do everything to foil the macabre plans of the terrorists, while without her knowing it her fiancé has gone to his search…

Three generations of women are revealed alongside Sira: Aissatou, her mother, Kémi, a kidnapped teenager, sequestered as a sex slave. A difficult first shoot for our actress who nevertheless rose to this challenge. The director of the film SIRA acknowledges the difficult conditions in which the film is shot in an interview on Burkina 24.

Three (3) months of filming in the Mauritanian desert, you really have to do it. Nafissatou, from his young age coupled with the lack of experience in acting at the time, achieved the feat. Overcoming the high temperatures and all the hazards of filming several hundred kilometers from his native Burkina Faso.

It took courage. But the strength of character of Nafissatou Cissé and her determination to take up the challenge allow her to be up to the challenge to reap laurels today. Now a soaked actress in tooth and claw, she is now passionate and thirsty for role-playing.

Despite the difficulties, Nafissatou, as those close to her call her, succeeded in her first role with flying colors. From now on, he’s a star. Despite the difficulties encountered, cinema, what can I say, acting is now a passion for Nafissatou Cissé. The change is clear. Far from shaking her, the difficulties during this first shoot and the delicious nectar of success that followed rooted Sira in the world of cinematographic art.

Plus, she’s passionate. The course of his life changes. Cinema sticks to him. « I didn’t want to be in cinema, but since I spent these three months in Mauritania, playing a role, being another person, it captivated me, galvanized me and it became a passion for me. If tomorrow, someone calls me to offer me a role in a film, if the role I’m offered meets the standards I want, if the script is good, I’ll jump« affirms Nafissatou Cissé without hesitation.

Furthermore, this role also allows our star to rediscover himself intrinsically. This role brings out another personality in her that she didn’t know, another hidden facet in her. Putting oneself in the shoes of a character, bringing out emotions that are not necessarily their own allows them to better understand the world, to see the world differently, to understand people better. In a word, to grow.

« This was necessary so that I might have more maturity, that it would be humanly speaking and professionally speaking. This is something I really loved and appreciated. With acting, you have to feel emotions from a character that isn’t yourself.

You are able to put yourself in certain people’s shoes to understand their feelings. I tell myself that this revealed even more maturity in me. Nafissatou before SIRA and Nafissatou after SIRA, it’s the same person, but with greater maturity« , acquiesce-t-elle.

It is therefore an understatement to say that this role transforms Nafissatou Cissé. She goes from the young student who goes unnoticed to this star in the spotlight. People’s outlook changes towards him, and “that’s normal anyway”, she admits, letting out a hint of a smile. However, faced with this life as a star, Nafissatou keeps her head on her shoulders.

In any case, SIRA is a good person, a real person, according to those close to her. In addition, personality-wise, on the other hand, she remains herself after having entered the world of stars of the Burkinabe seventh art. She is a person who says what she thinks, bluntly, she doesn’t like hypocrisy. With a touch of humor, Lazare Minoungou, the 2023 Sotigui d’or, adds: “ she’s a witch. Just kidding, she’s a friendly, courageous and curious girl« .

The young actress, after this dazzling entry into the seventh art, does not intend to stop there. She plans to continue acting, giving the best of herself and surpassing herself again and again. In fact, Nafissatou tried it and she stayed! “When I tried it, I liked it. Playing a character is great.

This is something wow!“, she confides with eyes dreaming of perspectives. Filming prospects are in sight, she is also in discussions with directors with a view to other filming, but she will not tell us more.

Unquestionably, SIRA seals the destiny of our young actress, more opportunities, many more openings. “Being a Lambda person it was complicated, but with SIRA I had many more openings and entries”, she tells us.

At 25 years old, not yet officially married, she doesn’t say a word about her romantic situation. We already know enough about his life and the bright future that is promised to him in the cinema. According to Lazare Minoungou, she is destined for a bright future as an actress, if only the conditions at the national level “independently of her, are brought together and if she trains and learns more about acting and the profession of cinema itself”.
