Updated may 25, 2025
In a surprising turn of events, former protest leaders Sondhi Limthongkul and Jatuporn Prompan, once divided over Thaksin Shinawatra, have joined forces to protest the former prime minister. the alliance was confirmed at a discussion event at Thammasat University in Bangkok on Sunday.
Sondhi, who spearheaded protests against Thaksin in 2006 as a leader of the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD), has found common ground with Jatuporn, a former leader of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) and ally of the Pheu Thai Party.
Sondhi said he invited Jatuporn to support his movement, noting Jatuporn’s shift from working for Thaksin to fighting against him. Jatuporn said Thaksin had admitted to law violations but had not been imprisoned, citing issues of privileges and double standards as reasons for opposing him.
The alliance comes as Sondhi has threatened street protests if the government does not scrap the 2001 memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Cambodia regarding maritime claims in the Gulf of thailand. Sondhi contends the MoU benefits Cambodia by creating an overlapping claims area rich in fossil energy resources.
“Jatuporn had worked for Thaksin but at present was fighting against Thaksin and ready to work for the public interest,” Sondhi Limthongkul said.
