Launch Aborted Due to Ground Systems Issue
Elon Musk’s SpaceX has postponed the 10th test flight of its Starship megarocket due to an issue with ground systems at its launch facility in Texas. The company announced the decision approximately 30 minutes before the scheduled liftoff on Sunday, August 24, 2024, stating the delay would “allow time to troubleshoot.” SpaceX intends to attempt the launch again on Monday, August 26, 2024.

This launch postponement is the latest in a series of challenges for SpaceX’s Starship program. Previous test flights of the rocket’s upper stage, conducted in January, March, and May of 2024, resulted in mid-flight explosions. A “static fire” test in June also ended with the vehicle exploding on the launchpad.
Despite being designed for full reusability, SpaceX has yet to successfully deliver a payload to space with the upper stage or achieve a return to the launch site.
Starship’s Role in Space Exploration
The 403-foot (123-meter) Starship spacecraft is central to Elon Musk’s long-term goal of colonizing Mars. NASA also plans to utilize a customized version of the vehicle for its upcoming crewed missions to the Moon.
Planned Flight Profile
Had the 10th test flight proceeded as planned, the Starship upper stage would have separated from the Super Heavy booster at an altitude of dozens of miles. the Super Heavy booster was intended to land at the launchpad using giant mechanical arms and then target a soft water landing in the Gulf of Mexico to test a backup engine configuration.
Starship itself was scheduled to briefly ignite its engines to increase its velocity and attempt to release a batch of mock Starlink satellites. It would also have attempted to reignite an engine while following a suborbital path around Earth.
Future Hurdles Remain
Even if the 10th test flight is successful, spacex faces critically important technical challenges. These include achieving full and rapid reusability at a low cost and demonstrating the ability to refuel super-cooled propellant in orbit.
