Spain has emerged as the leading destination for asylum seekers across the European Union, a significant shift attributed in part to a dramatic drop in applications from Syria following the ousting of dictator Bashar Al Assad in December 2024.
Syrian Exodus Slows, Reshaping EU Asylum Landscape
The sharp decline in Syrian asylum applications is considered a primary driver behind Spain’s ascent to the top spot, according to a report by the EU Agency for Asylum seen by the Financial Times. The numbers have plummeted from approximately 16,000 in October of the previous year to just 3,100 in May 2025.
“Since February, Germany has no longer been the top EU+ destination; Spain, Italy and France all received more applications in May 2025,” the agency stated.
Venezuelan Migration Fuels Spanish Surge
While overall EU asylum applications have decreased in 2025, Spain has experienced an influx of migrants from Venezuela, drawn by the shared language and cultural ties. This trend is further bolstered by a perceived firmer stance on immigration by the United States since Donald Trump’s return to power in January, perhaps encouraging more Venezuelans to seek refuge in Europe.
Spain is witnessing substantial arrivals, especially in the Canary Islands, with a record 60,000 people arriving in 2024, the majority originating from West Africa and reaching the shores primarily by small boat.
Italy and France Follow as germany tightens Borders
italy has now become the second most popular country for asylum applications, receiving 12,300 claims in May, a decrease of one-third from the previous year. France ranks third with 11,900 claims, a slight dip from last year’s 12,500, with conflict in French-speaking nations like Congo and Haiti being significant contributing factors.
Across the EU, a total of 64,000 asylum applications where recorded in May, marking a 25% reduction compared to the same period in 2024.
Germany’s New Stance on Migration
In Germany, new Chancellor Friedrich Merz has pledged a more robust approach to migration, a critical issue that dominated the country’s recent election. The far-right party Option for Deutschland (AfD) achieved a record number of votes and secured second place in the election, campaigning on an anti-immigration platform that resonated strongly in several regions. In line with this new policy, the German government has issued directives to border staff, instructing them to turn away individuals without the necessary documentation.
