President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has officially resigned after fleeing massive anti-government protests in the wake of national bankruptcy.
Immediately after arriving in Singapore, Gotabaya sent a letter of resignation to Sri Lanka’s National Assembly Speaker Mahinda Yappa Abeiwardena via email, the Speaker’s Office said.
President Gotabaya fled to the Maldives, but arrived in Singapore on a Saudi Arabian Airlines flight on the 14th (local time).
In response, Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that “President Gotabaya entered Singapore on a personal visit” and that “he did not seek asylum and was not granted asylum.”
The final destination of President Gotabaya is still unknown.
