The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has announced a temporary reduction in fare for eight special air-conditioned diesel express trains. Effective from September 1, 2023, the SRT is also recruiting new food service contractors on these trains.

Mr. Ekarat Sriarayanpong, Head of the Governor’s Office at the SRT, revealed that interested parties can submit proposals for the northern route (Bangkok – Chiang Mai), the northeastern route (Bangkok – Ubon Ratchathani), and the southern route (Bangkok – Surat Thani) starting from August 8, 2023. However, no private companies have offered documents for purchase.

In addition, the SRT has recently issued a notice inviting applications for a new round of food and beverage service arrangements, as well as service staff on the trains. The goal is to secure contractors as soon as possible. Currently, the SRT is in the process of issuing a notice inviting proposals, and it is expected that the results will be known within approximately 90 days. In the meantime, the ticket price for temporary seats on these trains has been reduced by 80 baht, starting from September 1, 2023, until a contractor can commence operations.

The eight trains for which the fare has been reduced are as follows:

  1. Special Express Train No. 7/8: Bangkok Apiwat Central Station – Chiang Mai – Bangkok Apiwat Central Station
  2. Special Express Train No. 21/22: Bangkok Apiwat Central Station – Ubon Ratchathani – Bangkok Apiwat Central Station
  3. Special Express Train No. 39/40: Bangkok Apiwat Central Station – Surat Thani – Bangkok Apiwat Central Station
  4. Special Express Train No. 43/44: Bangkok Central Station Apiwat – Surat Thani – Bangkok Central Station Apiwat

Mr. Ekarat mentioned that the SRT is requesting passengers to bring their own food and drinks for consumption during the train journey. However, if passengers wish to order food and drinks, they can notify the train staff in advance, and no extra charges will be incurred.

Passengers who have purchased tickets in advance before September 1, 2023, can request a refund of the 80 baht meal service fee on the day of travel. They must present their ticket to the train staff as evidence for future refund processing at the destination station.
