Suresh Gopi Announces Rs 10 Lakh Assistance for Transgender Community: A Step Towards Gender Equality

Kochi, 02 Nov 2023: Renowned actor Suresh Gopi has extended his support to the transgender community by announcing a generous assistance of Rs 10 lakh for gender reassignment surgeries. The aid will be provided through a foundation established in memory of his late daughter Lakshmi, who tragically passed away in a car accident.

Gopi made this announcement as the chief guest at the ‘Keralapiravi Transgenders’ program, organized by the Mumbai-based socio-cultural organization, Prachika Foundation. During his speech, he acknowledged the numerous petitions raised by the transgender community and emphasized the need for their concerns to be addressed by relevant authorities, including Union Minister Smriti Irani.

The event witnessed the presence of notable personalities such as Prakiya Foundation Chairman KB Uttam Kumar, guest transgender activist, BJP State committee members CG Rajagopal and PS Sivashankar, Chevalier KV John, Parthen K. Pillai Nashik, Sujith Bharat from Thrissur, TR Devan, MP Biju, and the cast of the film ‘Garudan’.

In response to media inquiries, Gopi maintained a distance from reporters, stating, “No body touching, please stay away from me…” as he swiftly made his way past the media microphones. The actor had visited Kochi to celebrate the birth of a transgender individual in Kerala.

The atmosphere at the program turned tense when the police arrived, triggering rumors of a bomb threat. However, the police clarified that their presence was part of routine security checks in light of recent incidents, including an explosion in Kalamassery. During the commotion, a transgender individual raised objections, alleging a deliberate attempt to disrupt the event. Once the police gave assurance and returned, the program proceeded as planned.

Upon his return to the podium, Gopi expressed his understanding of the police’s duty and urged everyone to respect their work without causing disturbance. He clarified that he halted his speech as instructed by the authorities. The Central Police further confirmed that no bomb threat had been received.

Suresh Gopi’s gesture of support towards the transgender community is commendable, reflecting the growing recognition of their rights and the need for wider acceptance.

He was speaking as the chief guest at the ‘Keralapiravi Transgenders’ program organized by the Prachika Foundation, a socio-cultural organization in Mumbai.

“Transgenders have presented many petitions. He no longer has the ability to solve them on his own. But let’s give a chance to present all of them before Union Minister Smriti Irani” said Suresh Gopi.

After the police returned, the program continued.
