Suspect in Moscow Concert Hall Attack Detained and Ordered to Remain in Custody

A suspect in the Moscow concert hall attack appeared in court and was ordered to be detained

(AFP, Moscow, 24th) A concert hall in the suburbs of Moscow was attacked on the 22nd, killing 137 people. Russia’s state-run news agency said the first two people facing terrorism charges appeared in court late today. The court has made the first decision to remand one person in custody.

A statement uploaded by the Moscow City Court to the encrypted messaging software Telegram noted that the Basmanny District Court ruled that Tajik citizen Dalerdjon Barotovich Mirzoyev should be detained until May 22 pending a terrorism investigation.

The statement stated that Mizoev, who was accused of committing a terrorist attack with a group of people, “pleaded guilty.”

The TASS news agency reported earlier that Saidakrami Murodalii Rachabalizoda and Mizoev face charges of “a group of people carrying out a terrorist attack, resulting in the death of people.”

The court released a video showing police escorting a handcuffed suspect into the courtroom and released a photo of the man sitting in a glass cage for the defendant.

Russian authorities said they had arrested 11 people, including four gunmen who fled to Bryansk Oblast, about 340 kilometers southwest of Moscow.

According to Russian media and MP Alexander Khinstein, some of the suspects are Tajiks. The population of this former Soviet republic adjacent to Afghanistan is predominantly Muslim.

The massacre at the Crocus City Hall concert hall on the night of the 22nd killed 137 people and injured more than 180 people. The radical jihadist group Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility.

However, Russian officials have yet to respond to the Islamic State claims, saying instead that the suspects have ties to Ukraine.

Kiev has denied taking part in Russia’s deadliest attack since the early 2000s.
