Manuka Honey: A Natural Remedy for Breast Cancer

Manuka Honey: A Promising Treatment for Breast Cancer

Manuka honey, harvested from the flowers of the Manuka tree in New Zealand and southeastern Australia, has been found to have anti-cancer properties. Recent research suggests that it may also be effective in treating and preventing breast cancer.

A study published in the international SCI-level academic journal Nutrients, titled “Manuka honey inhibits the progression of human breast cancer in preclinical models,” has shed light on the potential benefits of Manuka honey in breast cancer treatment.

According to the World Health Organization, breast cancer is the second most common cancer worldwide, with an estimated 2.3 million women diagnosed in 2022. A research team from the University of California, Los Angeles, conducted a study to investigate the effectiveness of Manuka honey in treating and preventing breast cancer.

The researchers found that Manuka honey inhibited the proliferation of breast cancer cells and reduced tumor growth in laboratory experiments. Notably, it had an excellent inhibitory effect on estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer cells, which account for approximately 80% of all breast cancer diagnoses. The antitumor effect of Manuka honey was comparable to that of the antiestrogen treatment Tamoxifen.

In animal experiments, Manuka honey was found to inhibit tumor growth in mice transplanted with human breast cancer cells. Surprisingly, it inhibited tumor growth by up to 84% without affecting normal cells or causing serious side effects.

This study highlights the potential of Manuka honey as a natural remedy for breast cancer, reducing the side effects of existing treatments and suggesting the possibility of developing new natural cancer treatments. The researchers concluded that “Manuka honey could be used as an effective substitute for patients with estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer, particularly those who have developed resistance to tamoxifen.”
