A massive landslide avalanche has engulfed the Swiss village of⁢ Blatten, leaving​ it buried under debris. ‌The glacier collapse ​sent⁤ ice and soil crashing down the mountainside, destroying ‍homes and​ prompting a large-scale emergency ‌response. Fortunately, ⁤the village’s‌ 300⁢ residents had been evacuated a week earlier, averting potential casualties.

The ⁢sheer force of the avalanche ​disaster registered as a 3.1 magnitude earthquake. Drone footage shows ‌the village ⁢blanketed ‍in mud and soil, ‌with ⁢a⁣ river ⁣cutting​ through the debris. The incident ‍occurred around 3:30 p.m. local time when‌ a significant portion of‌ the Birch glacier broke off, according to emergency crews in the ​Wallis region.

The ⁤Swiss government has ⁢deployed the army to assist local ⁣authorities in‌ the⁣ aftermath. While no injuries or ‌deaths have been reported, Blatten’s residents ⁢will be unable to return to their​ homes, which​ have been completely destroyed.

Matthias ⁤Bellwald, ⁣Blatten’s‍ mayor, acknowledged the devastation.

Raphaël Mayoraz,⁣ head of the ‌regional Natural‍ Hazards‌ office, cautioned​ that further evacuations ⁤may be necessary in ⁣nearby towns. ⁤Experts had ‌been monitoring ​the glacier’s movements, noting increased activity before the ⁣avalanche.

Matthias Ebener,a⁢ spokesperson for local authorities in Valais,described the event.

“An unbelievable amount of material thundered ⁣down into the valley.”

Jonas ​Jeitziner, a ⁣spokesman ‌for the Litschental crisis center, saeid authorities‍ were​ assessing the damage ‍by helicopter and across the area.
