Tens of thousands demonstrate against the AfD – crowds in Cologne

In several cities, tens of thousands of people took to the streets against the shift to the right. In Cologne the demonstration had to be redirected.

A t-online reporter reported a peaceful atmosphere. There were many schoolchildren and students among the demonstrators. A police spokesman commented on the event with the saying: “The people of Cologne don’t let anything burn.”

8,500 people demonstrate in Hanover

In Hanover, 8,500 people took to the streets against the AfD, as the “Hannoversche Allgemeine” reports, citing police information. Among other things, people shouted: “The whole of Hanover hates the AfD.” In Würzburg, more than 2,000 people marched through the city center. Here too, the demonstration was peaceful, reports the BR, citing the police.

In Schwerin, too, many people demonstrated against the rise of the AfD and against right-wing extremism. According to police information, around 1,600 Schwerin residents followed the call “Loud against the right”. The campaign was initiated by the climate protection movement Fridays for Future in Schwerin, which received broad support from parties, unions and associations.

The reason for the demonstrations was the recently announced right-wing meeting in a villa in Potsdam. The former head of the right-wing extremist Identitarian movement in Austria, Martin Sellner, said he spoke about “remigration” last November. Right-wing extremists usually mean that a large number of people of foreign origin should leave the country – even under duress. You can read more about the meeting here. In response to this, there were several demonstrations nationwide over the weekend.
