The Future of Healthcare in Korea: Doctors, Nurses, and the Impact of Government Policies

A professor at one of the metro area’s “Big 5” hospitals argued that to increase the number of pediatrics and obstetrics and gynecology departments in rural areas, a hospital that can be run by patients, not doctors, is needed.

According to the medical community, on the 27th, a video titled “The 5 Great Reigning Medical School Professors Sent What They Wanted to Tell People About the Medical Crisis of 2024” was posted on the channel “Medical School Professor Created by YouTube – Naeuri Yu” the day before. This channel is run by Professor Lee Dong-ik, a former ophthalmologist at Paik Hospital in Seoul.

Mr. A, who identified himself as a current professor working at the “Big 5” hospital, a large hospital in the metropolitan area, shared his thoughts anonymously through the channel, saying, “If I upload a video under my name, there will be There will be problems in the hospital and there will be strong opposition at home.” I sent a video containing this. The title of the video is “If we increase the number of doctors, will they go to rural areas?”

Mr A said: “I decided to talk about it because people thought it was just a food fight and they thought of it very negatively,” and added: “The government says the problem is that there are no pediatric departments and local obstetrics and gynecology departments”. “It’s not the doctor’s fault.”

He said: “The reason why there are no paediatricians and no obstetrics and gynecology departments in the local areas is because there are no people in the local areas.” She added: “Because the birth rate is low, there are no pediatric patients and no pregnant women. “There are no patients,” she said. She continued: “However, I think that if we increase the number of doctors, someone will go to rural areas where there are no patients and someone will practice pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology,” adding: “This assumption is wrong.”

A current professor at a “Big 5” hospital argued that it is necessary to allow the country to maintain hospitals as a solution to local healthcare. /The medical school professor created by YouTube: Naeuri Yoo

Mr A said that to run a hospital you need buildings, medical equipment, surgical equipment and staff. Therefore, Mr. A said that to maintain the hospital it is necessary to see 40 patients per day. He explained: “Because there are no patients in the local small towns, we can only see 30 patients a day, which means we are at a loss,” adding: “So, the paediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology departments will disappear.” He continued: “The more patients we see in the emergency room, the more we lose money, so there’s no need to talk about it.”

According to Mr. A, in Europe and elsewhere, regional legislatures are established and managed by the state. Therefore, it is said that the hospital can function if doctors only visit 20 patients a day.

Mr A said: “There are cases where large entrepreneurs build hospitals in rural areas thinking they will make a loss.” He asked: “If a doctor has just studied and graduated, would he open a pediatrics or obstetrics and gynecology clinic? in the countryside thinking you were at a disadvantage?” He said: “In places with few patients in rural areas, the probability of maintaining hospitals is almost 0%, so no one goes there.”

Mr A said that as a solution, the government should build and operate a hospital with paediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology departments. He said this is the same logic as the government building and running a school in a rural area where there are no students. Mr A said: “But now they ask doctors to do this,” and added: “From the doctor’s point of view, I don’t understand the government’s policy.”

Meanwhile, starting today, the government has decided to promote a pilot project to use medical support staff to minimize the gap in the medical field due to the departure of trainees. However, nurses, who will form the main part of the pilot project, seem against it. Under the current medical law, only doctors can perform medical treatment, so PA nurses replacing or assisting medical practice have always been considered illegal. Previously on the 23rd, the Korean Nurses Association announced the need for legal measures such as the Nursing Law to protect nurses forced into illegal care.
