[사진=클립아트코리아]Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), estimated to be present in nearly half of the world’s population, is a type of bacteria that lives in the sticky mucus surrounding the stomach. It can spread from person to person through raw foods or water contaminated with bacteria. Although in most cases it does not cause health problems, about 15% of people can develop ulcers in the lining of the stomach or duodenum.

However, research findings have revealed that these common gastrointestinal bacteria can travel to the brain and cause Alzheimer’s disease. A study published in the journal Alzheimer’s & Dementia found that people who experienced symptoms of H. pylori infection were 11 percent more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia.

Researchers at McGill University in Canada analyzed health data from more than 4 million people aged 50 and older between 1988 and 2019 and found that the risk of developing brain disease was highest for 7 to 10 years after being infected by bacteria and that patients with gastrointestinal diseases caused by infections had a higher risk of Alzheimer’s disease and were 24% more likely to suffer from it

The researchers said: “We cannot prove that Helicobacter pylori infection is a precise cause of the increased risk of Alzheimer’s,” but explained: “The bacteria can travel to the brain, causing inflammation and loss of brain cells.” .

The researchers said: “H. “Pylori can disrupt the blood-brain barrier via the oral-nose-olfactory axis or via infected circulating monocytes, potentially leading to neuroinflammation, neuronal damage, and neurodegeneration,” she added.

The researchers also said: “The bacteria can also disrupt the gut microbial community, causing overproduction of amyloid, a sticky protein found in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients,” and added: “The gut damage caused by chronic Alzheimer’s infection Helicobacter pylori can cause vitamin loss.” B12 and iron: “May affect absorption, which has been linked to dementia.”

Researchers have estimated that eradicating Helicobacter pylori could prevent approximately 200,000 cases of Alzheimer’s disease worldwide each year.
