The number of new confirmed cases is rapidly increasing in South Africa, which is pointed as the epicenter of the spread of the new mutation ‘Omicron’ of Corona 19.

South Africa’s National Institute of Infectious Diseases said on the 27th local time that the number of new confirmed cases was 3,220, the highest in more than two months since September 18th.

This is a 3.63 times increase compared to a week ago, and it showed an explosive increase from 312 on the 23rd to 868 on the 24th, 2456 on the 25th, and 2828 on the 26th.

Most of the new cases came from Hauteng, South Africa’s metropolitan area.

On the 22nd, when the institute announced that it first detected Omicron, it only reported that “the frequency of occurrence is relatively high in Houteng”, but did not disclose the number of new confirmed cases due to mutation of Omicron.

In the local area, experts estimate that up to 90% of new confirmed cases are caused by Omicron.

Dr. Angelique Kutze, who was the first to inform South African health authorities of the mutation, said the symptoms of Omicron are “unusual but mild” in an interview with the British daily The Telegraph.
