[디지털투데이 AI리포터] Nowadays, with the diet and healthcare craze, the importance of protein intake is increasingly emphasized, and research results have been published showing that excessive protein intake can be harmful to heart health.

Recently, according to Medical News Today (MNT), a research team from the University of Pittsburgh conducted a study on 23 participants to evaluate the effect of protein intake on atherosclerosis.

Participants followed a high-protein diet, consuming more than 25 g of protein per meal, or 22 percent of their daily energy needs, for 1 to 2 weeks. Subsequent health tests revealed that a high-protein diet that excessively increases protein intake activates specific immune cell pathways linked to atherosclerosis. In other words, a high-protein diet contributes to the deterioration of artery health through leucine, an amino acid present in the body.

Experts warn against high-protein eating habits. Even if your protein intake is the same, a plant-based and plant-focused diet is better than an animal-based diet, and if there is a need to increase the amount of protein, it is advisable to proceed after consulting a nutritionist or doctor.
