Thirsty for Change: Munzenze Hill Residents Plea for Access to Clean Drinking Water
Water Scarcity on Munzenze Hill: A Growing Concern for Residents
Inside the fence of the center that welcomes former street children is the only water tap that supplies a large part of Munzeze hill.
Access to clean drinking water is a fundamental human right, yet the residents of Munzenze Hill in Mishiha community, Cankuzo province, are struggling to access this essential resource. The only available tap is located inside a center that welcomes former street children, but it is insufficient to meet the needs of the entire population.
According to Christella, a resident of the hill, a 20-litre container of drinking water must be rationed to last several days due to the scarcity of this resource. The population relies on the tap at the center, but it often runs dry, especially in the afternoon. As a result, many people wake up at 4 am to queue for hours, hoping to fill their containers early.
Multiple Faucets Needed to Address the Crisis
The residents of Munzenze Hill are calling on the authorities to install additional taps to serve the different corners of the area. This would alleviate the pressure on the existing tap and provide easier access to clean drinking water for the community.
Despite the presence of reservoirs on the hill, they do not serve the population. The tap at the children’s center is connected to an existing line, and residents believe that it would not be difficult to connect other taps if the authorities were willing to take action.
