Tripadvisor ‍Confronts‌ Increase in Fake Reviews

Updated May 26, 2025

Tripadvisor’s latest “Openness Report ⁢2025″‌ reveals that approximately 8% of the 31.1 million ‌reviews submitted‍ in 2024 were fraudulent.‍ This figure represents a significant increase compared to 2022, prompting the company to intensify its⁤ efforts in combating⁤ fake reviews and maintaining‍ the integrity of its platform for travelers‌ seeking authentic experiences.

Becky Foley,‍ vice ‌president ⁢and head of trust and safety at Tripadvisor, clarified that the surge in detected‌ fake reviews ‌doesn’t necessarily indicate a doubling of such content on the site. Rather, ‌it reflects the⁤ company’s ‍evolving policies and⁤ enhanced detection methods, especially concerning incentivized reviews. these occur when businesses offer‍ rewards for ‍positive feedback, leading to biased or manipulated content.

Foley emphasized that Tripadvisor’s system is continuously‍ improving through a three-pronged approach:⁢ automated detection, human review, and community feedback. ⁤In 2024,⁤ the system automatically rejected 7% of submissions before they‌ were ⁤even posted, while an⁢ additional 5% were flagged for further human scrutiny. Ultimately, the trust and safety team moderated ⁤over 4.2 million reviews, representing‌ more than 13% of all submissions.

Of the 244,000 reviews disputed by community members,⁣ 28% were removed, ‌highlighting the ‌importance of user feedback ⁣in identifying potentially⁢ fraudulent content.Tripadvisor categorizes fake submissions into boosting,⁢ vandalism, member fraud, and ‌paid reviews.

While vandalism is frequently enough perceived as the primary ‍source of fake⁣ reviews,Foley noted that boosting (54%) ‌and member fraud ⁢(39%) constitute the majority. Paid‍ reviews,⁣ though less frequent‍ (4.8%), are considered particularly harmful due to their organized⁤ and⁢ often deceptive nature. Many originate from Asia,‌ with Indonesia and Vietnam being prominent sources in 2024.

Combating fake reviews ⁣is an ongoing challenge, described by Foley as a “cat and mouse” game. tripadvisor employs sophisticated⁤ technology, including AI and ‌behavioral‍ biometrics, to detect patterns and anomalies indicative of fraudulent activity. Investigators even pose as⁢ fake review brokers to gather data and identify perpetrators.

Violators⁢ face penalties, including ranking⁤ demotions⁢ for a year and ⁣a red badge on their listing warning users of potential⁣ deception. While Tripadvisor acknowledges that complete eradication of fake reviews ⁣is unlikely, the company remains committed to ‍continuous enhancement ‌and‍ proactive measures.

“We are the first to admit that we’re never going ‍to reach absolute perfection. We might ⁤not catch [a fake] the first time, but we’ll catch it eventually.”

Becky Foley, vice president and head of trust and safety at Tripadvisor

AI Reviews: Not Fake, But Not⁤ Allowed

Foley addressed the misconception that most AI-generated ‍reviews are inherently ⁣fake, explaining that many are written by ‌travelers using the technology to refine their writing. Though, Tripadvisor currently prohibits⁢ AI-generated⁣ reviews to maintain authenticity and prevent a “sea of sameness.” in 2024, over ⁢200,000 suspected AI-written reviews⁤ were removed.

What’s next

Tripadvisor ⁣will continue to refine its detection methods and adapt to ⁤evolving tactics used‌ by those attempting to manipulate the platform. The company remains focused on empowering travelers with reliable and ⁣trustworthy facts⁢ to make informed decisions.
