President Donald Trump arrived in Beijing on May 14, 2026, for a high-stakes summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, accompanied by a delegation of the world’s most influential business figures. The meeting was characterized by an unusually warm tone, as the U.S. President predicted a fantastic future together for the two nations.

The summit serves as a convergence of political power and corporate influence, with the administration bringing along a group of top executives to facilitate new trade and investment deals. Trump described the accompanying group as the greatest businessmen, noting that the administration reached out to the top 30 in the world and every single one agreed to join the trip.

The high-profile delegation includes several of the most prominent figures in technology, finance, and aerospace, highlighting the intersection of global commerce and celebrity wealth. Notable attendees include:

  • Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX
  • Tim Cook, CEO of Apple
  • Larry Fink, CEO of BlackRock
  • Stephen Schwarzman, CEO of Blackstone
  • Kelly Ortberg, CEO of Boeing
  • David Solomon, CEO of Goldman Sachs
  • Cristiano Amon, CEO of Qualcomm

During the opening of the bilateral meeting, Trump emphasized the personal rapport between himself and President Xi, calling the relationship the longest that any two presidents of the respective countries have shared. He praised Xi as a great leader and stated that whenever the two had encountered problems, they worked that out very quickly.

President Xi responded with similar calls for cooperation, framing the relationship between the two major powers as one of shared interest. Speaking through a translator, Xi congratulated the American people on the 250th anniversary of American independence.

China and the United States both stand to gain from cooperation and lose from confrontation. We should be partners, not rivals. We should help each other succeed and prosper together, and find the right way for major countries to get along well with each other in the new era.

President Xi Jinping

Xi expressed his desire to make 2026 a historic landmark year that opens a new chapter in the relations between the two countries, arguing that a stable bilateral relationship is beneficial for the entire world.

The economic objectives of the trip are substantial. White House officials indicated that the president aims to deliver more good deals across several sectors, including energy, agriculture, and aerospace. Discussions are also centered on the creation of a proposed U.S.-China Board of Trade and Board of Investment.

According to a senior administration official, the trade framework currently under discussion could involve commerce at double-digit billion levels. This may include specific purchase commitments from China for agricultural products and aircraft.

This emphasis on dealmaking and personal diplomacy comes despite a history of friction. Trump has maintained sweeping tariffs on Chinese goods into his second term and has frequently criticized previous U.S. Policies that allowed China to integrate into the global trading system without offering reciprocal market access.

The current approach in Beijing aligns with Trump’s established tactic of using personal diplomacy with foreign leaders as a tool for negotiation. While the rhetoric remains upbeat, administration officials confirmed that discussions are ongoing regarding more complex issues, including artificial intelligence, security matters, and the situation in Iran.
