U.S.-Iran diplomatic talks have effectively stalled as Washington pursues a diplomatic solution that was never seriously on the table, according to a former U.S. ambassador. The impasse follows months of heightened tensions and military actions in the Middle East, including a joint U.S. and Israeli strike on Iran carried out on February 28, 2026.

Stalled Diplomacy and Regional Fallout

Diplomatic channels between Washington and Tehran have seen little progress following the military engagements earlier in the year.

President Trump’s latest threat to bomb Oman is another attempt to deflect blame from the failure to resolve the conflict with Iran that he initiated on February 28.

Kristian Coates Ulrichsen, Baker Institute for Public Policy

Ulrichsen noted that the end of a 60-day period outlined in a memorandum of understanding signed by Trump in June has passed with little tangible outcome regarding the unblocking of the Strait of Hormuz or wider negotiations with Iran. Muscat, the capital of Oman, has historically served as a critical diplomatic channel and mediator between Washington and Tehran.

Threats to Regional Partners and the Strait of Hormuz

During a Fox News interview, Trump warned that the United States would bomb Oman if the Gulf nation interfered with American efforts related to Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, according to reports. The waterway handles approximately one-fifth of global oil exports.

Oman has maintained diplomatic relations with both the United States and Iran, often facilitating dialogue during regional crises. The White House and the Omani Embassy in Washington were reached for comment regarding the remarks, while the Pentagon deferred inquiries to the White House.

Broader Military Context Since January 2025

The friction over diplomatic talks coincides with a series of military operations authorized by the Trump administration since the start of his second term in January 2025. Past actions include strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan in June 2025 following the collapse of nuclear negotiations.

Additional military operations during this term have targeted locations in Somalia, Iraq, Yemen, Syria, Nigeria, and Venezuela, ranging from counterterrorism missions against ISIS and al-Shabaab to the January 2026 operation in Venezuela that led to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro. Unofficial reports indicate that draft peace proposals concerning shipping lanes and Iran’s nuclear program remain under discussion among regional allies as international stakeholders attempt to navigate the blocked trade routes.
