- UK Foreign Secretary Echoes Trump’s Call for Increased NATO Spending
London – British Foreign Secretary David Lammy has made a bold statement, echoing sentiments previously expressed by former President donald Trump, calling for European NATO members to significantly increase their defense spending.
Outlining the Labor government’s foreign policy approach, dubbed “progressive realism,” Lammy painted a stark picture of Europe’s security landscape.
“The post-Cold War peace is well and truly over,” Lammy declared during a speech in London. “Donald Trump and JD Vance are simply right when they say that Europe needs to do more to defend its own continent. It’s myopia to pretend otherwise with Russia on the march.”
Lammy’s comments come amid growing concerns over Russia’s aggression in Eastern Europe and its broader military ambitions. While acknowledging Trump’s often unpredictable style and “intensity of rhetoric,” Lammy emphasized the need to focus on the substance of his message.
“We can be guided not entirely by the rhetoric and the language,” Lammy stated, highlighting the urgency of the situation.”Europe’s future security is on a knife edge.”
Trump has long been a vocal critic of NATO, questioning the alliance’s value and threatening to withhold support from members who fail to meet defense spending targets. He has repeatedly called for NATO countries to increase their contributions to at least 5% of their GDP, a significant jump from the current 2% target.
While the UK currently spends 2.3% of its GDP on defense, with plans to increase it to 2.5%, Lammy’s remarks signal a potential shift in the UK’s stance on defense spending within the NATO alliance.
The Foreign Secretary’s speech underscores the growing sense of unease in europe and the need for a unified and robust response to the evolving security challenges.
