UK inflation at highest level since 1980 Food prices rose 14.6 per cent in the year to September. The Ministry of Statistics revealed that the prices of meat, bread, milk and eggs have jumped. Consumer goods inflation reached 10.1 percent. This is the highest rate since 1982.

The increase in prices has put the government in a further crisis after the publication of the economic policy. The opposition parties insist that the government should be prepared to give aid to the most economically disadvantaged families. However, the new finance minister, Jeremy Hunt, backed away from Liz’s announcement of a pension rise.
