UK Should Lead NATO Spending Push Amid European Instability, US Ambassador Says
London – As political uncertainty grips france and Germany ahead of Donald Trump’s potential return to teh White House, the US ambassador to the UK, jane Hartley, believes Britain is uniquely positioned to rally european allies to increase their contributions to NATO.
Speaking at Bloomberg’s Women, Money and Power conference, Hartley acknowledged that Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government has faced a “rocky” start. However, she emphasized the UK’s historical leadership role within the alliance and its continued commitment to defense spending.
“The UK has always been a strong advocate for NATO and a important contributor to its defense capabilities,” Hartley stated. “Given the current political climate in Europe, it’s crucial that the UK takes a leading role in encouraging its partners to meet their NATO spending commitments.”
Hartley’s comments echo the longstanding call from former President Trump for European nations to shoulder a greater share of the financial burden within the alliance. Trump frequently criticized European allies for not meeting the NATO target of spending 2% of GDP on defense. While the UK consistently meets this target, many other European countries fall short. Hartley believes that the UK, with its experience and influence, can play a pivotal role in persuading these nations to increase their defense investments.
“The security challenges facing Europe are complex and evolving,” Hartley added.”A strong and united NATO is essential to addressing these challenges, and that requires a shared commitment from all members.”
