Ukraine, Russia Exchange Bodies Amid Conflict

‍ ‍ Updated June 14, 2025

KYIV, Ukraine — Ukrainian officials announced Friday the latest repatriation of fallen soldiers’ bodies, a result of agreements made during peace talks ‍with Russia in Istanbul. The ⁣ body repatriation involved a notable number of remains as the conflict ⁤continues.

According to ⁣Ukraine’s Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, Russia returned 1,200 bodies. The headquarters stated that, “according to the Russian side, the bodies belong to ukrainian citizens, in particular⁢ military personnel.”

The repatriation process involved multiple Ukrainian ⁢agencies, including the ⁣Armed Forces, Security ‍Service, ‍and Interior Ministry. Forensic experts are now ‍working to identify the remains.

This exchange marks one of the largest returns of remains as Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began more than three years ago. earlier in the week, Russia had returned 1,212 bodies of Ukrainian soldiers and received 27 of ⁤its⁤ own.

The agreement to exchange ⁤prisoners of war and bodies was a key outcome of the June 2 Istanbul talks.

A prisoner of war swap ⁣also occurred Thursday, including severely wounded and gravely ill captives. Specific numbers⁢ were not disclosed.

Alongside the exchange of prisoners and bodies, both sides presented memorandums outlining conditions for a ceasefire. However, disagreements on key clauses make ‍a quick resolution unlikely.

Despite these discussions, moscow’s forces have continued launching ‌drone ⁣and missile ⁢attacks on Ukraine. Recent barrages⁣ included a record of nearly 500 drones on monday and 315 drones with seven missiles on tuesday.

The Ukrainian air force reported that Russia launched 55 Shahed and decoy drones, along with four⁤ ballistic missiles, overnight Friday. Air defenses reportedly neutralized 43 drones. No casualties or damage were immediately reported.

Russia’s defense Ministry claimed its air defenses downed 125 Ukrainian drones over several Russian regions and Crimea late Thursday‌ and early Friday. The role of⁣ air defense systems is ⁢crucial in the ongoing conflict.

What’s next

Further negotiations ‌are expected, though the path to a lasting ceasefire remains uncertain amid continued‌ military actions and disagreements on essential terms.
