Ukraine Now Able to Use Storm Shadow Missiles to Strike Targets Inside Russia

The shift comes as Germany, France, the United Kingdom and the United States have reportedly lifted restrictions on how Ukraine can deploy the weapons they provide.This marks a meaningful change in the conflict, potentially allowing Ukraine to more effectively defend itself against attacks originating from Russian territory.
The United States authorized Ukraine to use American long-range ATACMS missiles against targets inside Russia in November 2024. That same month, Britain approved Ukraine’s use of Storm Shadow missiles against Russian targets. France also indicated at the time that strikes on military targets within Russia were an option, supplying it’s Scalp missiles to ukraine.
merz’s recent statements suggest that range restrictions on these weapons may have been in place until recently. He did not specify when each country made the decision to allow unrestricted deployment. As of now, there has been no official confirmation from the other nations mentioned.
The Kremlin has reacted negatively to the news, calling the increased firepower for Ukraine “dangerous” and detrimental to achieving peace.
“If these decisions have indeed been made, they are entirely at odds with our aspirations for a political (peace) settlement. These are quite dangerous decisions, if they have been made,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
The Storm Shadow missile, a precision-guided weapon, is capable of traveling at 600 mph and uses GPS to accurately strike targets. Germany’s equivalent is the Taurus missile system. While former chancellor Olaf Scholz supported Ukraine, he hesitated to supply Taurus missiles due to concerns about escalating tensions.
Merz has previously voiced his support for sending Taurus missiles to Ukraine but did not confirm whether his government has begun doing so. The German government has stated it will no longer disclose details about its weapons being used in Ukraine, opting for strategic ambiguity.
