Ukrainian President Claims Army Repelled New Russian Offensive in Eastern Donetsk

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced on Wednesday that Ukraine’s military successfully repelled a fresh offensive by Russian forces in the town of Abdevka in the eastern Donetsk region. Despite heavy fighting, the Ukrainian army managed to hold its ground and is now consolidating its positions. President Zelenskiy, along with senior military officials, visited the Kherson region to assess the situation in Abdevka and neighboring areas, such as Kupyansk, where Russian attacks have escalated.

In a video message posted on the messaging app Telegram, Zelenskiy expressed gratitude to the soldiers who continue to uphold national defense and achieve victories over the aggressors on a daily basis. Furthermore, the presidential palace reported significant personnel and equipment losses on the Russian side during the attack on Abdevka, though no specific details were provided.

While Reuters was unable to independently verify the current status of the battle, the Russian government claims to have gained an advantage in the conflict around Abdevka. However, the Ukrainian military has reported an escalation in fighting along the front, with approximately 90 clashes occurring within the past 24 hours. This figure represents an increase from the average of 60 incidents observed a week earlier.

KIIV (Reuters) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Wednesday his country’s army had repelled a new offensive by Russian forces in the eastern Donetsk region town of Abdevka and was consolidating ground amid heavy fighting.

Zelenskiy and senior military officials visited the southern Kherson region to discuss the region, the area around Abdevka, and Kupyansk to the north, where Russian forces have stepped up their attacks.

“The losses on the Russian side in recent days have been really huge,” he said in a video posted on the messaging app Telegram, adding, “I would like to thank all the soldiers who maintain a strong national defense and defeating the incumbents day after day. Thank you very much.”

The presidential palace said the Russian attack on Abdevka had caused “record losses” of personnel and equipment, but gave no details of the extent.

Reuters could not confirm the status of the battle.

The Russian government insists that its forces have an advantage in the war around Abdevka. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian military said fighting was intensifying on the front, with around 90 clashes in the past 24 hours. This is higher than the average of around 60 cases a week ago.
