Honoring a War Hero
The news of Rose’s death was announced on Friday by James Dawson, the leader of the Erewash Borough Council in the north of England.Dawson paid a heartfelt tribute,calling Rose a “war hero” and stating,”Erewash was privileged to count him as a resident.” This sentiment reflects the deep respect and admiration held for Rose within his community and beyond.
In May, Rose was among 45 veterans honored at a special tea party hosted by the Royal British Legion at the National Memorial Arboretum. This event celebrated the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day,a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the war.

Born on Christmas Eve in 1914, just as World War I erupted, Rose’s life was deeply intertwined wiht the major conflicts of the 20th century. Reflecting on VE Day at the May celebration, Rose shared a poignant memory: “When I heard that the armistice had been signed 80 years ago, I was in Germany at Belsen and, like most active soldiers, I didn’t get to celebrate at that time.” He added, “We just did what we thought was right and it was a relief when it was over.” His words offer a powerful glimpse into the realities faced by soldiers during wartime.
originally from the village of Westcott, southwest of London, Rose joined the army at the age of 23. His military career took him across North Africa, Italy, and France. His remarkable service was recognized with numerous medals, including France’s highest honor, the legion d’Honneur.
Donald Rose is also believed to have held the distinction of being the U.K.’s oldest man, a testament to his long and impactful life. His legacy as a courageous soldier and a cherished resident will undoubtedly endure.
