Even if you have played a lot of gaming hardware in the past, such as home game consoles or portable game consoles, there are still many things you don’t know about it.

For example, you may know the places you touch often, such as the ROM cassette insertion slot or the power button, but if it is a rarely used part, such as a connector for a peripheral device, the name will immediately come to mind . mind. I’m sure many of you don’t have one.

Some “mysterious terminals” that most players don’t even know what they’re for exist silently. This time we will focus on the strange terminal that Nintendo’s Wii U had.

Wii U, the previous generation of Nintendo Switch, was released by Nintendo on November 18, 2012. The main body shape follows the “Wii” released in 2006, but a new dedicated controller “Wii U GamePad” (hereinafter referred to as GamePad). In addition to a 6.2-inch LCD display, this GamePad was equipped with numerous features such as NFC and motion sensors, which allowed you to play games not only on the TV screen but also on the GamePad screen.

The “mystery terminal” we’re focusing on this time is found on this highly functional GamePad. If you look closely, you can see that there is some kind of large terminal at the bottom of the GamePad. According to the Wii U instruction manual, this terminal is called the “external expansion connector” and says that it “connects external expansion devices for the GamePad.”

However, to date no peripheral compatible with this external expansion connector has been released. Looking at Nintendo’s official website, which has a line of Wii U peripherals, there are products like the “Wii U Microphone” and the “Balanced Wii Card,” all of which do not require an external expansion connector to connect. In the end, Wii U passed the baton to Nintendo Switch without having the opportunity to make its value known to players.
