This weekend, those in the Yeongdong area of Gangwon-do should be careful of heavy snow.

Up to 60 cm or more is said to be falling, but this snow is particularly heavy as it contains water vapour.

As far as the damage is concerned, today’s news will look at this situation first.

Let’s go to the site.

Reporter Ara Lee, is it snowing a lot at the moment?

◀ Reporter ▶

Yes, I’m in Daegwallyeong right now.

Starting this afternoon in the Gangwon mountains, the rain has turned to snow.

This is a waiting area for highway snow removal equipment.

As the snow gets thicker, the equipment gets busy with the snow removal agent.

Currently, heavy snow warnings have been issued in the central mountains of Gangwon, and heavy snow advisories have been issued in six cities and counties along the eastern coast of Gangwon.

There are places where more than 20 cm of snow has already accumulated in the mountains.

So far, the amount of snow has been 24 cm in Misiryeong and Hyangrobong, 11 in Jinburyeong, 7 in Daegwallyeong, and 6 cm in Gangneung.

This snow is predicted to reach 60 cm by next Monday.

Gangwon-do started the first phase of the Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters last night, and Gangneung-si, in particular, is doing extensive snow removal with 45 pieces of equipment.

To date, there have been no road closures or reports of damage due to heavy snow.

However, 2 to 3 cm of snow is predicted to fall continuously in Gangwon-do for three days.

When snow clouds cross the Taebaek Mountains and reach the metropolitan area, up to 7cm of snow is expected to fall in Gyeonggi-do and 1 to 3cm in Seoul.

Reporter Lee, two years ago, heavy snow poured down on the east coast of Gangwon, and the damage is significant.

How are local governments preparing for this heavy snow?

◀ Reporter ▶

Yes, on March 1st last year, over 90 cm of heavy snow fell on the east coast of Gangwon, leaving around 700 vehicles stranded on the Donghae Expressway overnight.

With heavy snow in the forecast, it’s another weekend where visitors are on the road.

The Korea Meteorological Administration is looking at the gobi from tonight to tomorrow night.

It is heavy ‘wet snow’ with the snow and steam that has fallen this time.

Structures such as greenhouses can collapse or small ships can sink, so preparation is necessary.

If a lot of snow falls suddenly, there is concern about an isolated vehicle accident, so you should check the traffic situation and bring winter equipment such as car chains.

The Korea Meteorological Administration called for caution, saying that there are places with thick fog with visibility of less than 200m around the mountains.
