US Representatives Propose Bill to Ban TikTok if Parent Company Refuses to Sell Shares

Members of the US House of Representatives proposed a new bill yesterday (March 5) that would ban TikTok if its parent company, China’s ByteDance, refuses to sell its TikTok shares.

The website foxbusiness.com reports that the Act to Protect Americans from Foreign Control would require Bydance and other Chinese companies to sell all their shares.TikTok within 180 days or TikTok will be banned from US app stores and web hosting services.

The bill was introduced by Republican Representative Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin and Democrat Raja Krishnamoorthy of Illi. who is chairman and ranking member of the House of Representatives Select Committee on Strategic Competition between the United States and China. The bill aims to address concerns about TikTok’s relationship with the Chinese government.

said Mr Gallagher “TikTok needs to cut ties with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) or it will lose American users. Allowing a platform controlled by the greatest enemy of the United States to operate in the country is unacceptable. TikTok will no longer be allowed to stay in the US. unless separated from the byte dance controlled by CCP.”

In addition, added Mr. Krishnamoorthy that “As long as TikTok remains under the control of Bydance, and cooperation is required, the CCP will be considered a serious threat to our national security. Our bill aims to protect US social media users by forcing them to isolate apps controlled by foreign adversaries. This is essential to protect Americans from potential threats such as digital espionage. and the influence of various governments that could exploit their personal data.”
