A Second Chance for a Pioneering, if Flawed, System
Nintendo is bringing back the experience of it’s 1995 Virtual Reality headset, the Virtual Boy, to modern consoles. The company announced on September 12, 2025, that a selection of Virtual Boy titles will be added to the Nintendo Switch online service, playable on both the original Switch and the forthcoming Switch 2.
Dedicated Headset required
To recapture the unique visual experience, players will need a dedicated headset accessory. This new hardware replicates the form factor of the original Virtual Boy, allowing users to dock their Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 console for viewing. A more affordable cardboard version, reminiscent of the Nintendo Labo VR Kit, will also be available.
Game Library and Release Details
A total of 14 Virtual Boy games will be included with the service. Confirmed titles include Mario tennis and Tetris. Nintendo plans to begin rolling out the games on February 17th, but the full library will be released incrementally over time.
Pricing and availability for the headset accessories have not yet been announced as of September 12, 2025. Nintendo has not provided a firm launch date or cost for either the dedicated headset or the cardboard choice.
