WASHINGTON (AP) — A recent study from Tufts University suggests a potential link between insufficient vitamin K intake adn impaired brain health as individuals age. Vitamin K is abundant in leafy green vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, green peas, and kale.
Study Details and Findings
The research, conducted by scientists at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts, examined the effects of a low-vitamin K diet on brain function in middle-aged mice over a six-month period. The study compared these mice to a control group with a normal diet.
Tong Zheng, lead author of the study, noted existing research indicating vitamin K’s role in brain function and the decline of cognitive abilities during aging. “Vitamin K seems to have a protective effect,” Zheng said. “Our research is trying to understand the underlying mechanism for that effect, so that we might one day be able to target those mechanisms specifically.”
Menaquinone-4 and Cognitive Performance
The study, published in The Journal of Nutrition, specifically investigated menaquinone-4, a form of vitamin K present in brain tissue. Mice with vitamin K deficiencies exhibited significantly lower levels of this nutrient in their brains and displayed signs of impaired memory and learning abilities in various cognitive tests.
In one test, mice were tasked with distinguishing between familiar and novel objects. Mice with low vitamin K levels struggled with this task, indicating memory deficits.Another test involved finding a hidden platform in a pool, where vitamin K-deficient mice took considerably longer to learn the platform’s location.
Brain Changes and Inflammation
analysis of the mice brains revealed changes in the hippocampus, a brain region crucial for learning and memory. The vitamin K-deficient mice showed reduced production of new brain cells,a process vital for maintaining brain health.
Researchers also observed increased inflammation in the brains of mice lacking sufficient vitamin K, possibly exacerbating cognitive issues.
