The incident took place in Bolt, located about 40 miles south of Charleston. The call reported a mentally disturbed individual armed with a gun.
When the deputy arrived at the scene around 9 a.m., the individual immediately fired at him. The deputy returned fire, fatally wounding the shooter.
The deceased has not been identified yet, as the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office is working to inform the next of kin.
The deputy sustained a gunshot wound but is in stable condition and receiving treatment at a local hospital.
Investigations are ongoing, involving both the sheriff’s office and the West Virginia State Police.
