Why Some Patients Struggle with Weight Loss Drugs Like Wegovy and Ozempic
Struggles with Obesity Medications
Many people have sought weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy. Danielle Griffin, a 38-year-old IT worker from New Mexico, had no issues obtaining them. She had a prescription, her pharmacy stocked the drugs, and her insurance covered much of the cost. However, the real challenge for Griffin was the drugs did not work effectively for her.
“I have been on Wegovy for a year and a half and have only lost 13 pounds,” she shared. Despite maintaining a healthy diet, drinking water, and exercising regularly, Griffin felt discouraged by her minimal weight loss.
Understanding Drug Effects
In clinical trials, participants taking Wegovy or Mounjaro lost an average of 15% to 22% of their body weight. However, about 10% to 15% of patients were “nonresponders,” losing less than 5%. Experts now estimate that around 20% of patients may not respond well to these drugs.
Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford, an obesity expert, noted that genetics, hormones, and brain functions influence weight and the effectiveness of these drugs. Certain medical conditions like sleep apnea and some medications may also limit weight loss.
Patients’ Reactions
Patients often feel discouraged when they do not see significant weight loss after starting the medication. Dr. Katherine Saunders referred to this situation as “devastating” for those with high expectations.
After struggling with obesity for many years, Griffin hoped to lose 70 pounds with Wegovy. While the drug reduced her appetite and lowered diabetes risk, her weight remained largely unchanged.
Path Forward
It usually becomes clear within weeks if a patient will respond to the drugs. If weight loss does not begin soon, medications may not be effective. Some patients experience side effects like nausea and diarrhea, prompting them to stop.
Dr. Jody Dushay reassured patients: “It’s not game over.” Trying different medications within this drug class can be an option. Griffin, who switched to Zepbound, has lost 7 pounds after three months.
Experts also recommend exploring older weight loss drugs and making lifestyle changes in diet, exercise, sleep, and stress management. Dr. Saunders emphasized the importance of an obesity specialist for effective treatment.
“Obesity needs comprehensive treatment,” she advised. “If what we’re prescribing doesn’t work, we always have a backup plan.”
This approach can lead to a more personalized and effective weight loss journey.
