Estonian Charity Embraces Winter Swimming to Support Ukraine
As February marks four years since the escalation of the war in Ukraine, the Estonian Refugee Council is spearheading a unique fundraising initiative: a charity winter swimming challenge. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the harsh conditions faced by Ukrainians this winter, exacerbated by intensified Russian attacks and severe weather and to collect donations for those affected.
The challenge, running throughout February, invites individuals to take a dip in cold water at designated safe swimming spots and share their experiences on social media. Participants are encouraged to document their chilly plunges, fostering a sense of community and solidarity with Ukraine.
Beyond the social media component, the Estonian Refugee Council is actively soliciting donations to support crisis and evacuation centers operating within Ukraine. These centers provide vital assistance to those displaced by the conflict, offering essential items, medical and psychological support, and legal and social services.
Currently, 21 evacuation centers are functioning across Ukraine, providing a lifeline for individuals fleeing the war. Temporary crisis centers have been established in major cities like Kyiv, offering warmth, hot beverages, internet access, and device charging stations – crucial resources during the frigid winter months.
However, these centers are facing significant challenges, particularly regarding heating and energy supplies. The combination of sub-zero temperatures and ongoing attacks is straining resources and impacting the ability to provide adequate support. The Estonian Refugee Council’s fundraising efforts are directly aimed at addressing these critical needs.
The charity is also organizing joint swims at specific locations, offering participants access to a heated sauna with a donation. Scheduled swims will take place at Logi sauna in Tallinn on Thursday, February 26th, from 4-8pm, and at Lennusulps in Tallinn on Saturday, February 28th, from 11am-5pm. Entry to the saunas is contingent upon a donation to the Estonian Refugee Council.
The initiative comes as Ukrainians face an exceptionally difficult winter. The intensified fighting and severe weather conditions have created a desperate situation for many, highlighting the urgent need for humanitarian assistance. The Estonian Refugee Council hopes this unique challenge will not only raise funds but also amplify awareness of the ongoing crisis and inspire further support for the Ukrainian people.
