Microsoft is rolling out a new feature to its Xbox app on Windows 11 designed to simplify the PC gaming experience. The “My apps” feature, currently in testing with Xbox Insiders, aims to consolidate access to not only Xbox Game Pass titles but also third-party launchers and applications, eliminating the need to constantly switch between different storefronts.
Beyond Xbox Game Pass: A Unified Library
The Xbox app has already begun integrating games from other PC platforms like steam, Battle.net, and ubisoft Connect into a unified library.”My apps” takes this a step further by allowing users to directly launch applications like web browsers and gaming utilities from within the Xbox surroundings. Devin Dhaliwal, a product manager for Xbox experiences, explained that the feature is designed to make it ”more straightforward to find, download, and launch games from multiple locations,” as stated in a recent Xbox News post.
This is especially beneficial for users of handheld gaming PCs, such as the ROG Ally, who may prefer to avoid navigating the full Windows desktop interface. ”My apps enables players on an ROG Xbox Ally or other Windows 11 handhelds to more easily navigate between applications from the Xbox full screen experience,” Dhaliwal noted.
Early Testing Reveals Potential and Quirks
Initial testing of the “My apps” feature has shown a list including Battle.net, Chrome, and GOG Galaxy. While launching already-installed applications like Chrome and Battle.net worked seamlessly, attempts to install GOG Galaxy directly through the Xbox app encountered issues during testing, highlighting the beta nature of the feature and the expected presence of bugs.
