Yoon Seok-yeol’s approval rating, which plummeted to 37%

There are signs of a sharp decline in the approval rating (approval rate) of President Yun Seok-yeol for state affairs. One after another, survey results showed that the approval rating collapsed by 40% beyond the ‘dead cross’ level, in which negative evaluations were higher than positive evaluations.

As the reasons, respondents cited personnel, economics, and incompetence as the reasons for the survey.

According to Gallup, the response that President Yoon is doing well now is mostly from the People’s Power supporters (70%), conservative groups (62%), and those in their 60s (50% range), and the Democratic Party supporters who say ‘I’m doing it wrong’ (83%), the progressive group (77%), and those in their 40s and 50s (60%).

In particular, Gallup’s job approval rate fell from 53% in the second week of last month to 37% this week, while the denial rate rose from 33% to 49% during the same period, indicating a ‘dead cross’ phenomenon that exceeded the positive rate for the first time since taking office. With the exception of the 6070s, negative evaluations were overwhelming for all generations. By region, positive and negative evaluations were 37% and 49% in Seoul, 33% and 53% in Incheon, and 40% and 50% in Chungcheong, respectively. .

According to a past survey by Gallup Korea, the approval rates for the 18th and 19th presidents fell below 40% for the first time in the third week of December 2014 (37%, the final stage of the Blue House document leak investigation) and October 2019, respectively. In that it was the third week (39%, around the time of the resignation of Justice Minister Cho Kuk), it showed a big difference from President Yoon.

Regarding the reason for such negative public opinion, Gallup Korea found that among the negative evaluators of job performance (493 people, free responses), ‘personnel affairs’ 25%, ‘don’t look at the economy and people’s livelihood’ 12%, ‘lack of experience/qualities/ ‘Incompetence’ 8%, ‘diplomacy’ and ‘arbitrary/unilateral’ 6% each, and ‘lack of communication’ 5%.

Conversely, the positive evaluators (372 people, free responses) for the performance of the president said that they were good at ‘diplomacy’, ‘overcoming previous governments’, ‘communication’ (6% each), ‘determination/drive/perseverance’, ‘subjection/belief’ , ‘generally good’ (5%), etc.

Gallup Korea’s survey was self-reported and conducted by telephone surveyor interview method, and the response rate was 10.7% (1,000 people out of 9359 total calls completed), and the sampling error was ±3.1 percentage points (95% confidence level).

In addition, as a result of a media tomato survey of 1,056 adult men and women on the 5th and 6th of the last month, 37.6% of the positive evaluations and 59.6% of the negative evaluations of the Yun Seok-yeol government’s state affairs were found. The media tomato survey was conducted using the wireless ARS method, and the maximum allowable error is ±3.0%p at the 95% confidence level.
