Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on the 29th (local time) that the situation in the eastern region of Donetsk is difficult and that new weapons must be provided quickly.
“The situation is very difficult,” said President Zelensky in a daily speech that evening.
President Zelensky said, “Russia wants to continue the war and evacuate our armed forces,” and said that rapid aid and new weapons support to Ukraine should be considered.
Ukrainian forces earlier said they had repelled a Russian attack near Vlahodatne in the eastern Donetsk region. Conversely, the Wagner Group, a Russian private military company, has presented mixed claims that it has taken control of Blahodatne.
The previous day, President Zelensky urged the United States to provide support for ATACMS surface-to-surface missiles with a range of 300 km. The US has been refusing to support ATACMS missiles for fear of escalating the war.
Shortly after Zelensky’s speech, an apartment building in Kharkiv was set on fire by a Russian airstrike.
In addition, the southern city of Kherson was attacked, killing three people and wounding six others in hospitals and schools.
Meanwhile, the British Ministry of Defense announced on the same day that “Ukrainian tank troops have arrived in the UK to train for continued fighting with Russia.”
“The UK, together with its global partners, will deliver Challenger 2 to Ukraine, demonstrating the strength of its support for Ukraine internationally,” the ministry said.
The US and Germany announced last week that they would provide Ukraine with their main battle tanks, the Abrams and the Leopard 2, respectively, and Britain also announced earlier this month that they would supply 14 Challenger 2s.
Ukraine has repeatedly said it needs 300 tanks to drive Russian troops from its territory.
